This film has been a bit understood
(starting by me!), but that doesn't make it bad. It's a very original
story based in some real facts. The play written by Jane Austen when
she was child existed indeed and was auctioned and won by Ivory (or
someone related to him). Realizing it was a childish tale and couldn't
make a film of it, the best thing was to make a film about the
expectations the producers had on this play, and how do they managed to
make something coherent of
it.
Robert's character is Pierre, an avant-garde
director who had an affair with the director of the other troupe,
more
classical. Pierre
thinks he can make an actor of any simple person. The ambiance of the
film is very 70s for moments and a bit slow too. James Ivory could have done better having
such an excellent actor as Robert Powell!
